The people are the most insufferable outside of LA.
DC isn’t overpriced, but it is very boring.

Yes
You can burn through everything interesting/fun to do/see in DC in about 18 months. After that, time to pack your bags and move away.

That’s why I left 😬
Hot take, but I think you’re missing out on the “soul” of the city if you’re not in the political/government/public interest sphere - you meet lots of interesting people doing interesting work that you really don’t really get anywhere else.
90% of that city is gunner lawyers.
DC is basically what New Yorkers think LA is like. Overrated as hell and straight-up sucks once you’ve blown through the historical and political intrigues

I'll never forget the wedding afterparty I went to at the Georgetown Inn where some dumb college kid's wingman kept hitting on my clearly married friend by saying, "Do you know his dad is a Senator?" Dude, NOBODY CARES.
That summed up people's idiotic skewed views of who purportedly mattered in DC for me.
Not my town
It’s true. Every city has its currency. DC’s is what you do for work and how connected you are to the hill. When people say the first question you’ll always get when meeting someone new regardless of the setting is “what do you do for work?” they aren’t kidding.
I like DC and think there is a lot to do. Very good food scene. Lots of “formal” arts.
Went to law school for one year in DC. Hated it so much I transferred. Refuse to ever move back
Areas right outside of DC (in MD and VA) are very affordable, given proximity to DC. But yes, it’s boring.
I live in NYC now but I’m clerking in DC next year. My firm gave me the option to transfer to the DC office if I want but I’m torn. NYC is fun but insanely expensive, while DC is the opposite :(
Thoughts on Philly?

Great food scene, cheapish rent and gorgeous countryside nearby. Aside from crime, Philly is awesome.

I’m a New Yorker who moved to DC for my first job (for the job, not the city, and very skeptically). I actually found it reasonably priced (maybe only by comparison) and with more interesting stuff to do than I expected.
Have since moved but was pleasantly surprised, especially after getting the chance to explore some of the cooler neighborhoods. Restaurant scene (pre-pandemic at least) was also buzzing.
