Anyone else jump on internal calls to blank stares, very little participation, and general lack of enthusiasm?

I often feel like everyone just expects me as an account manager to talk the most, bring the energy, etc., and that’s fine to an extent, but leaves me feeling defeated when it’s never reciprocated (and not for lack of me trying). 😣

oh. my. god. yes. ALL THE TIME. I've found that it happens most when 1) the team is burning out and 2) you don't have a clear agenda

Also - I try to humanize my internal calls and not just jump straight into business. Do something stupid or senseless...google stupid articles right before the call and start with "did you all hear about that man who drove through his ex-wife's house and threw a burning cabbage patch kid at her dog?!" (obviously made that up). But seriously, kick off your calls with something super absurd or light hearted. Everyone is under so much stress, whether they realize it or not, they appreciate the brief mental break before diving in.

Also we, as account people, have a reputation of being cold and hard on our internal teams, so a little warmth and understanding goes a LONG way.

This is great advice. I started this new job last year remotely and still am remote. I think part of my uneasiness is that I only experience my coworkers in this state of blank stares and really don’t know them outside of my screen. Makes it tough.

Glad it’s not JUST me though. Sounds like a common thing.

100% this.

In-person too. It feels like bringing energetic optimism and pumping up internal egos is half the job. I find it really draining.

Pro tip - just don’t try so hard. Be grumpy if you are. It’s ok.

Yes! It’s especially hard when everyone is on mute with their cameras turned off.
One time when I asked my team a question (just a random one unrelated to the project) and got nothing back, I just said „ok that’s the end of my podcast” and laughed it off 🤷🏼‍♀️ if they are not in a mood for small talk I’m not going to push it.

I have a coworker who keeps spouting comparative odds and situations in regards to the safety of the vaccine. Such as: you're twice as likely to get hit by lightening than have blod clots from JJ. It's very annoying and I find it to be really inapprorpriate, maybe because it's pushy or just I find these comparative things to be a bit irrelevant. How does one handle something like that? Can you shut the person down without starting a spat?

Advice on the jump from AAE to AE? I’ve been doing AE level work for months and have been told by many managers that I should be promoted but it’s in the hands of the holding co..how long do I wait?

Throughout my career, I have worked at both “traditional” and “digital” shops. My current agency would fall under traditional but also offers digital services. Our process, roles and skillsets seem way outdated but I wasn’t sure if it was just my opinion or if this is just how it works. For example, we have no CTO or tech leads. Our digital producers feel more like project managers than actual producers. Account Management is just traditional, no real digital knowledge. Feels layered and dated.
