Thank you for being a reasonable voice among the thousands saying how great this or that market is- just be reasonable, enjoy some travel, decent savings, and a 1st world qualify of life, I grew up poor and appreciate people who make the most of their upcoming. Good for you
Even during the peak of the recession, 90% of people had jobs. There will always be stuff out there.
I have this same fear that the lucrative exit ops may not exist in the future on a larger scale, not just in individual roles. I see a lot of clients trying to cut expenses by eliminating significant numbers of roles in the pay range I would want to exit to once I have enough experience. Levels above and below are then taking on more responsibility without a significant pay increase.... it makes me think that more and more companies will make cuts at management levels and by the time I’m ready to make a jump the type of role I want won’t exist anymore
If you are only in consulting for a certain kind of exit opportunity, I suppose that’s a risk you’re choosing to take, although I don’t know what better alternatives you have. I think consulting gives you a nice platform to grow and develop skills with some measure of influence on the direction that takes, and if you reach the point you are ready but the market has turned sour, you still have a pretty lucrative job and can essentially wait until better times come.
I don’t think there is going to be some magic time in the near future where all the good industry jobs are taken. There are up and down cycles but when the economy is good and companies are growing, there will be opportunities.
If not consulting, what would you do instead to prepare for these jobs you want? If that is a better alternative, why aren’t you doing it? If there is no better alternative, then you are worrying about things that are not in your control.
