Anyone ever bought a used luxury car? Like a Bentley Continental? Used ones are going for under $60k so it’s surprising. Yes I know maintenance would be high cost but some of these are low miles for like $40-50k

Generally not a good idea unless you have enough liquid cash to not be drowning in the car debt + maintenance and unexpected (always expect the worst) repair costs.

It’s tempting. Trust me I think about it all the time. There’s ways to get lucky and make it work. Back in the day Carmax used to sell cars like that which allowed you to pay a little extra for their bump to bumper warranty - now they are smart enough to no longer sell cars like that since they would lost money on it 😂

like

How recent was this change? And does it exclude certain vehicles now, or do Carmax simply not take certain makes/models and still have MaxCare for most cars?

It’s not surprising when you consider the once cutting edge technology is dated compared to a new Camry & there’s a limited market for a washed up status symbol.

Repair bills will exceed your upfront cost if you drive it long enough. Labor & parts are indexed to a $300k car, not what you paid

This is big one. Sitting inside one of the them is the ugliest thing imaginable

I had used Bentley and currently have a used RR Ghost. Maintenance hasn’t been an issue, only oil changes every 5k miles which is around $150 to $200 if you shop around.

It is a misconception fed into us from the beginning that many luxury cars are high maintenance and you need to spend thousands and thousands for repairs.

likefunny

Sorry you drove 2k miles a year for 2 years and are somehow saying you changed the oil every 5k miles?? You didn't even get to the first oil change by your own standard. I'd consider 2k miles borderline garage queen

Not sure if your "misconception" is that expensive cars start falling apart when they're parked, the expensive repairs come when you start taking the car off your driveway

It depends on the car. I bought a 2017 Audi Allroad with 70k on it but this platform is very robust and reliable so I’ve had no concerns or worries.

Used L405 Ranger Rovers on the other hand are gorgeous, dirt cheap, relatively modern and super tempting but I wouldn’t touch one with a 10ft pole. You need to do research if you’re serious.

I have a used 2011 Aston Martin DB9. Its maintenance is $350 per year. Had low miles and had needed nothing other than fluid changes. It’s naturally aspirated, hand built, and bulletproof reliable.

I was seriously considering picking up a used Bentley GT until I came across a couple YouTubers who shared their experience with a handful of them. One car had some minor issues that were easily repaired with VW parts and made for a great daily driver. The other examples had serious engine or transmission issues, which are said to be common faults on these cars, and which made them immediately decide to part out the cars instead due to the exhorbitant cost for parts and labor.

Even if you are handy and have a garage full of tools, it will be a big gamble.

911 count?

911 is in its own bucket because damn they hold value so well and are built beautifully.

I bought a new Honda Civic for that price 😤

The most expensive car you can buy is a cheap Rolls Royce (or Bentley, as the case may be). VAG has improved reliability by leaps and bounds, but will still cost a fortune to maintain.
