Anyone ever used veteran's preference for a job and felt like you were judged for it? Had a team member comment on this recently like I didn't deserve to be working where I am.

Yeah that really sucks when someone is rude like that.

Just remember this feeling if you are ever tempted to judge someone on their attributes (eg women, POC). It’s very common for insecure people to make comments that people don’t belong or were able to get the job without meeting the bar because they are a DEI group. Don’t be that guy.

I second this comment without reservation.

TBH I’m harder on vets as a vet when I interview them to make sure we don’t bring in shitbags who make the rest of us look bad.

like

I get this. What is the better alternative to the extra points for vets when what we really want is their alumni network to help them find opportunities for which they’re qualified?

I used veterans preference when applying when I had just gotten out. I didn’t get a job. I’ve applied for 3 jobs without starting veterans preference and got 3 offers 🤷‍♂️

like

I experienced the same. It felt bad being judged when it's my resume that says I am qualified. I will not apply for a job where I am not fit for the role.

Dumb question, vets preference is just for state and federal gov jobs ya?

For those of you who got out at 10, do you wish that you rode it out to 20? I’m at a crossroad and I’m not sure what to do. Have some active/reserve time, wrapping up graduate school, and am now considering either a) come back to the business world or b) go active and retire before 50 and live off a nice pension. Obviously there are draws to both. I’m an officer for what it’s worth so I can realistically retire at O-5, MAYBE O-6.
