Not an SM, but I’ve heard it becomes more difficult to find the “right” role in industry after you hit SM because industry roles tend to look for specialists that have operational execution (opposite of consulting) experience in the subject area. I’ve also noticed in my practice, turnover is quite low at the SM level, which always made me wonder if it’s due to limited exit opportunities or if they’re really holding their breath for Partner. Half the issue stems from the SM role being so sales focused. Nonetheless, I know a few (and I mean few) SMs that placed into decent Director / Sr Director roles but they’ve all said it took time to land the right role.
Watching this...
Has definitely been harder than expected at the SM level.
Trying to find orgs with ex-consultants/professional services network, roles aligned with multiple case experiences in the same industry, bias towards MBA (non-MBA here) in blue chip orgs, and the development path for comp above 225-250k usually eliminates at least 50% of leads. This has been my experience in focusing on non-tech/FAANG roles.
In my case everything I am seeing is much more than currently making. Manager here .. also depends on the market / city though
M1. Your point is valid and true
It definitely takes a while to find out how to tailor resume skills to industry roles and get the rhythm going but by interviewing more and more it’s good practice. I think from a title perspective have seen colleagues at SA level become directors and vps. I wouldn’t get so caught up in Sm etc. Aim high and sr director or director is possible. Really depends on role and org. But there is a lot of competition out there and companies tend to hire internally first. Try reaching out to your network for referrals
Interested to hear what others have to share though, especially the SMs that have successfully made the transition to industry. I’m up for promotion next year, while a former SM whose now in industry keeps ringing me up to join his team- so I’m kind of at a cross roads right now, but for the time being I’m leaning towards pursuing the promotion since I don’t think I’m ready for the industry life yet. Also have a kid in the picture now, so that definitely changes things.
