This is really a firm dependent, likely lawyer dependent, question

It depends how long you’re there for - I know some have rules associated with payroll and such that requires you live within a certain distance of an office. Not sure how that could be extended in the leave context though.
Consider taking FMLA leave. You can use that time to look for a local job if this firm says no to remote work. (You may have to return to your firm after the leave for a short period of time—check your FMLA leave policies.)
You can also ask for an unpaid leave if your finances allow for this.
Also, review your benefits to see if you can maximize anything else to help your relative. You can add dependents on a long term care policy, for instance.

So there’s one tactic, but it might be considered “high risk/high reward…”

Probably depends on the tax implications from the particular state for the partnership.
Yeah, I had it approved after my dad was diagnosed with ALS. It was already fairly advanced so it wasn’t really “indefinite” in that we knew he would be passing within months and I (and my family) would be returning to my home state after. That said, yes my group was very supportive and they helped me get it approved through the firm, but other groups are not that supportive and I know others have not had it approved.
I’m really sorry you had to go through that. It sounds really difficult.
