Does the 737-8 even have the MCAS system? This is a completely different plane, and I don’t think it does. Concerning incident, sure, but nothing to fret until we know more
It does not have the MCAS system, which has been fixed and extensively tested independently on the Max series of planes.
Both 737 MAX and 737-800 are very safe products. To LA1's point, 737-800 does not have MCAS, though the system has been redesigned, tested, tested again, and again, recertified, and cleared for safe return. Investigation into the China Eastern accident is just beginning but I would not be worried about flying on the 737-800.
Their deception around training requirements is fully documented. Correction, MAX8.
737 NGs are some of the safest aircraft out there with a 30 year history and one of the lowest MTBF rates in the industry. Not the most comfortable plane ever, but one of the safest.
