10 years at a construction boutique -> in house counsel for a large trade contractor where I've now been for 9 years. The transition for me was excellent. Found a place with great people, and a CEO with the right priorities.
Work life balance is the biggest blessing. I work a steady 8-530 every day. No nights or weekends or holidays except for responding to the occasional email. No timesheets. 18 PTO days a year and I use most all of them (without thinking about having to make up time later). I rarely miss a kid's event or spend more than an hour a day working when we're on a vacation.
comp isn't as good, especially if you're in big law (which I wasn't). For a while I was paid like a lower level attorney, but that was always more than enough to live comfortably. But I made my bones, the company has grown and my comp has grown along with it, to where I'm now over 300 (incl target bonus).
Day in the life is a lot of contracts, which isn't the most exciting. But also a lot of unexpected calls - things we're running into on a project. Ghostwrite an email. What do you think about this situation, etc. I've also had to learn a lot of labor law, and there's a good bit of HR situations where the question is can we terminate the employee in these circumstances. That sort of thing. I'm also heavily involved in managing all of our claims covered by insurance
If you're a trial attorney who likes that part of the job then you might find replacing the rush tricky. Or if you're a type A grinder who wants to maximize your earnings it's probably not the best spot unless you can get in on the ground floor with equity and flip a few PE sales into big paydays. But personally I love it, have never regretted the decision, and hope I never have to work at a law firm again.
