FWIW: As a female POC — I haven’t had any of the experiences mentioned above. And I’ve been in the NY office for 4+ years.
The work is the work and it tends to ebb and flow, both in “what’s personally interesting and impactful” vs. “what keeps the lights on,” but I’ve enjoyed the bulk of it because the teams have been sharp, wildly talented, and incredibly considerate. I’ve also felt fully supported by managers, mentors, and resourcing. And I think everyone, including leadership, has been trying to deal with Covid from a genuine place of care.
That said, of course your experience will differ depending on your group, client, role. (I also prefer some more than others.) But I think it’s one of those agencies where your time is what you make of it, meaning: It takes a minute (or more) to figure out, but once you know what you want and put in the effort, someone will always be there to help you get it.
The strategists are amazing - just watch out for certain account people and producers

Same experience as rga 1. They’re all about numbers and process, not a creative driven shop at all. Big, slow, can’t-get-anything-out-of-the-door type of shop. But good at PR making themselves look cool and edgy.
Thanks for the honesty
It depends on the group you're part of, in many cases. But generally speaking, people work hard, and do sacrifice a lot of their own time to just keep things afloat. To push things forward, you give up everything.
They smile to your face and treat people like machines, and it's only getting worse, now that there are fewer people to do the work. The people in charge focus on the numbers, models, and processes. They put on a good show, with some who drink their own Kool-Aid, and many fall for it.
There are threads in our bowl about how difficult it is and how much worse it's getting. If you want to go in that direction, it's fair to believe in the intent, but don't believe in the results.
Allegedly all about the team you work on but overall a lotta ego
If you’re not used to actually doing the work, even as a CD... don’t come here. You need to be on top of it. This isn’t a free ride like Publicis or McGerry.
If you’re a typical white male in advertising, no one cares. This isn’t McCann NY. It’s pretty diverse here.
Do it for the money and fancy salad bar but avoid Samsung at all costs.
Don’t drink the kool-aid.
There is a lot of really good work, tbh.
Leadership breeds like-mindedness, and they don't like to be challenged.
If you are not a straight white male avoid.
@R/GA 7, I know of some as well. One in particular did a fine job, was even complemented by our CEO, and was gone a week later, only to be replaced with a white male. Thankfully, the person who made that call is no longer here, but it did happen.
The people who survive at R/GA are the people who are good at taking credit for other people’s work. Are you good at what you do? If so, don’t go. You’ll get used for a year and then laid off and pushed out. Are you good at pretending to do work? If so, you’ll go far.
Sweeping comments like this are obnoxious. Sorry you had a bad experience. But this is not the only way to succeed or survive. Don’t take away from people who are working hard, producing great work, and growing.
The head of strategy and the group strategy leads are all women and people of color. The head of strategy Rachel Mercer is active on Twitter and has her own podcast, The Overthinkers. You can get a good sense of her there.
She is rare. Her experience is not the norm for most women in the company.
It seems hard for anyone to speak for most people, or to describe your own experience as the norm. YMMV in any situation. OP says she’s interested in strategy, and the group leads and the head of strategy are women and POC.
Yes, and that's a great example of diversity, which is sorely needed, but it doesn't automatically mean diversity automatically indicates a great culture. And it's not like the strategists only work with themselves. Good and bad culture can come from anyone and exist anywhere. I don't say that to argue against strategy's culture. I'm not in it. But it's not isolated from the rest of the company, especially the groups.
