Any Bridge Engineers/Structural Engineers in here? I got my PE this year and have 5 YOE in TX + an MS. What sort of raise would you expect for receiving your PE working in a consulting firm? I am EOR on a number of structures in development, I manage EITs and Drafters (within projects; I'm not a supervisor), and am doing a lot in general. I'm at 78k currently, which is apparently still in the upper range of EIT salaries per a job posting in CO. I'm thinking of 15% (5% merit, 10% PE). Any ideas?

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.

What’s your work-life balance like? I feel like I’m constantly working after hours, always balancing multiple projects, hardly ever going through a phase where there isn’t a ton of critical initiatives going on. Fellow underwriters what do you do for VOI on OTR Truck Drivers who have not filed a tax return and can only provide a recent 1099 or earnings statement. My institution does not use 1099 as historically this income is before expenses. Our traditional practice is tax returns but we have seen a large uptick in people transitioning into this line of work who don’t have a TR yet. I was thinking institute the practice of taking RMA’s EBIDA% based on the 1099/earning statement? Any other thoughts?
