I've did a short stint on the Plaintiff’s side, and for me, I did not enjoy it. On the defense side, it seems you do a lot more digging into the cases, research, discovery, etc. They also are more heavy on pre-lit, so if that's your thing, it would be great.
Thanks! Yeah the digging and research is what I enjoy the most.
I'll never go back to defense. I love working plaintiff side. I was at a big law firm running 35 billable hours minimum for months. I couldn't sleep without dreaming about the job. Constant pressure because every second of your day counts towards revenue and performance. I took a 14k pay cut but now I have the freedom to step away, go to appointments, my kids school events, and take time off and not worry about making up a billable hour requirement. I skip more lunches and bathroom breaks, it was completely unhealthy. Most of those attorneys will die lonely deaths, they never have time for friends, family, and vacations. Golden handcuffs. I watched associate attorneys have their first child and show up two days later for depositions. F that. Plaintiffs side, my bosses care about me, get to know me, buy us lunch, I only work 7 hours a day basically because my lunch is paid for. True 9-5.
Wow. The billables is what’s killing me now. I’m feeling that stress as well. They require at my firm at least 140-160 a month. Thanks for sharing. Definitely something to consider.
I have no perspective on the defense side, but I can tell you we do a ton of digging into cases, research and discovery in Federal WC. It’s very rewarding to help your clients get the care they need and do the research to support the cases for trial. I would never be able to go over to the defense side after seeing how people suffer and how much they need help on the plaintiff/claimant’s side.
Thanks for the perspective. I can definitely see that. I think since I’m in an area where fraud is high and the big PI firms just seem sketchy, I’ve viewed it like a scam.
I started in defense and after experiencing a disabling injury 7 years later I began working for a plaintiff attorney.
Billable hours is a must for defense as that is how you are paid. Plaintiff the attorney successfully win at trial they file a motion for attorney billable hours. I enjoy working both sides.
As a plaintiff personal injury paralegal I worked harder and that included overtime. Defense hours were set in stone and overtime had to be pre approved.
Best of luck.
