Who knew biglaw partners were all such big Ye fans?

I hate this job. That is all.
I interviewed with Firm A months ago and accepted a position to start this upcoming fall. Group leader called me to offer the position back in November 2020. Besides interviewing with partners at the firms, and diligent follow ups notifying them of my interest to get started, no communication has transpired since. It turns out that I accepted a better offer w/ Firm B for personal reasons and won’t be going to Firm A. What is the best way to notify Firm A? Call/email group leader? Call/email HR?

Having been on an H1B visa myself in the past my heart hurts thinking of the impact of being laid off has on the entire family. Wish companies/firms were more considerate and take into account the additional hardship faced by H1B holders during RIFs.
They no offered 3 out of the 4 Chinese national summer associates in the bar area this year. I’m currently on H1B and I can feel that pain. I will never consider Cooley as an option. I’d say it’s a really dumb move, considering the clients they serve are tech companies with strong international worker presence.
Who are also all doing RIFs….
I had an offer from Cooley last year as a lateral and ended up not taking it. Now on an H1B at a different firm and thanking my lucky stars.

Wow. I’m happy you dodged that bullet.
Tbh, I would not be super duper worried about layoffs if not for the H1B visa. If I were an American citizen or green card holder, it would suck to be laid off but it sucks way more to have to move back to your country especially if you haven’t lived there for a long time.
My law school discourages people who would be on H1Bs to apply to Cooley- this is because Cooley's international offices don't have US attorneys typically so if you don't get selected in the lottery there wouldn't be many options for you (compared to Kirkland, Latham, White & Case, Sterling, etc). I worked at Cooley for several years and didn't come across any attorneys on an H1B so can't imagine that many attorneys would be impacted in that way

Not sure that’s 100% true. I know many H1Bs who lateraled to Cooley. Once you get through the lottery, your new employer only has to file a change of employer petition so I imagine that’s how many H1Bs go to Cooley.
Some had visas, I’ve heard the immigration team/outplacement counseling firm are working with them to keep them in the country.
