We have a block of time at the end of the day when the three fifth grades all split up the kids into groups. Our intervention groups and special Ed groups are held at that time as well. It’s similar to a walk to read scenario except it’s called WIN time (what I need). Our highly capable kids (and kids that may not have that label but are driven and engaged) go to one of the groups where we do novel studies and discussion.
I have three of my own kids who are all labeled “gifted” but I take issue with a lot of the ways the gifted programs are run. I could get in a soap box but this may not be the place for it.
As a previous gifted kid who now teaches some of them, I do think there are a lot of issues with the programs. On that note, we mainly rely on our librarian who happens to be a rockstar at identifying reading material for gifted students, and then I try to provide at least some time every week to work with them on vocab. I honestly luck out because there are a lot of easy ways to challenge them with reading or writing that don't interrupt the whole class. Must be harder with math/science.
