Are counter offers frowned upon and how often changed

It really depends on the firm or the recruiter/ hiring manager. I was able to negotiate my salary up a little when I got this job. But I wouldn’t seek a huge bump. Also some companies have been known to rescind if you try to negotiate so keep that in mind.

like

Technically speaking, those companies did not rescind their offers since to counter means to reject.

like

You are going to want a good rationale for your number. “I am currently making x and expect a raise soon to x”, “I have another offer for X”, etc. Your hiring manager will need to bring the offer to her superior and will need to give a rationale to get it approved.

Negotiating just to try to squeeze a few grand without a strong rationale is highly frowned upon.

like

Always negotiate even if they offer you exactly what you asked for on the first offer. I did and got an extra 10k. The worst they can say is no. I’ve never had a company rescind an offer.

like

My offer from a government job opportunity I recently got was rescinded after I tried negotiating. So please be sure reflect on the opportunity cost of your decision if you're ready to let go of the offer for another. All they said they can't accommodate my request and thus decided to rescind the offer and they refused to reconsider when I said I would accept the original offer as is. This was a recent personal experience.

Depending on what they offer, I usually negotiate for more vacation.

First off, employment negotiations are two-sided. If someone doesn’t want to negotiate salary with you or act offended, walk away. Once employed, you lose considerable leverage to increase your salary.

When I interview, I am also interviewing the employer. I look for signs/signals of whether the person is respectful or if they are self-centered. Self-centered people tend to have more turnover and if I have to deal with training others more as a result, that comes with a premium price.

It really depends. In the past I have gotten backlash from companies that were underpaying me (definitely not a good fit for me) and others who have happily given me the amount that I asked for. Or the start date that worked with my schedule

I am currently working on my MBA in a professional evening and weekend program at a highly accredited university.
