We were desperate to hire, so we ignored height. Now we can be discerning. Holding out for tall, trust fund, blue eyes, etc. I like to hire people like me if given the luxury of a buyers market.
Yes definitely, attractiveness (which includes height) increases your chances of being hired
It's funny, that did sound totally weird at first, but I heard you out and I think you're on to something. I know I worked with people remotely and then when we met up in real life they just didn't seem like the same person. It's striking at times how the video version of a person is just different. I'm sure video meetings and interviews did inadvertently help some people.
It definitely helped, I'm an older person, and remote interviewing got me jobs, I think if they saw me in person, they would have passed me up due to my age. I interview great, I'm just middle aged.
It’s been studied and proven.
Link to the study? I'd be interested in reading it.
Unfortunately, you're probably right. The "quarterback and cheerleader" mentality doesn't end after high school. It is more predominant in jobs that directly interact with the public. Company's want the faces of the company to be attractive and young. The back office staff may be middle-aged, pot-bellied, balding, matronly, etc. After all, Ken and Barbie need to have somewhere to go when age takes its toll.
I think you're on to something. We're 100% remote and I'm a manlet so that checks out
What’s a manlet
Someone once ask Abraham Lincoln (notably tall in his era) how long a man’s legs had to be to be successful. His reply was “long enough to reach the ground”
My interesting anecdote is that all the women I know who were hired remotely are much taller than average. I met a bunch of people at Lakehouse for the first time and we were all unusually tall women.
Wait I'm a women and 5'11". Are you telling me now that this is why I've succeeded in this industry????
I'm 5'9
Remote interviewing hides lack of professional demeanor and wear, which is critical in client facing roles. We hired a few people that looked fine on camera and were completely unpresentable in person.
