Are in-house salary bands actually flexible Sometimes postings list a huge range, like $140K–$230K, which tells me nothing. how much wiggle room is there really when a candidate is strong?

That’s usually to account for a range of YOE from what I’ve seen.

like

Ok

Agreed that it’s generally based on YOE. You probably won’t hit the max range unless you’re super competitive and actually at the high end of experience. And even then they probably have a number on that range in mind that they’re targeting.

like

Got it

$140-$230 could mean they’re targeting people from class of 2023 to class of 2018 for the role. If you’re class of 2022, no matter how strong you think you are in my example, you’re probably closer to the bottom end of the comp range in their mind

Thanks!

Yes they definitely are. I hate when they post a range like that While it is based on your experience, it is hard to gauge when it is such a big range lik that.

like

I know. I also don’t like those big ranges

A lot of companies post the full range for the position, not the hiring range. So they may only be offering midpoint.

like

Yes, sounds like this, and they just post it but not actually disclosing it
