I continually hear that from recruiters.
I’m a hiring manager in tech GTM (just assuming you’re in tech as an AE). I’m personally indifferent but I have a recruiter that is pretty well-aligned with what my team needs.
That said, the job market is SO saturated that every opening gets hundreds or thousands of applicants sprayed at it. Especially when it’s a remote job in tech — definitely thousands. Most of the applicants don’t look at the JD and aren’t remotely qualified. Or they are so desperate that they’re willing to say whatever you want to hear but plan to leave asap (ex: will settle for pay or responsibilities they feel are beneath them). So yeah, when that’s what you’re dealing with suddenly dipping into a smaller, well-qualified pool of passive candidates is appealing. I have even seen companies not post roles and have their recruiters only do outbound.
I’m not saying anyone involved is wrong. I do think applying to jobs you’re not qualified for in this job market wastes everyone’s time. And that a lot of candidates expect a 2021 job market and aren’t thinking long term/strategically.
