Is capital one a good place to consider being a product manager? I’m desperately trying to exit a toxic work environment and I’m evaluating a capital one offer versus one from a rental app startup . Salary is super close for both but want to make sure I don’t run to the wrong company in an attempt to escape my current one Capital One

I made it with 40k/yr plus OT for my first job in NYC, but this was 12 years ago, so aiming for at least 45k sounds right. Back then there were lots of dollar slice pizzas and $2 falafels, and even free food at bars. Oops sorry not the point. But yeah definitely go for higher salary!
Rising Star
Why u tease us with good old days 👹
In 1991 Grey paid me $20k, I lived in a railroad, last street in Hoboken, ate pasta no sauce every night, could only go to what was free in Central Park, and tried paying at Statue of Liberty with all change which they refused to take. Not sure suffering through was worth the “but I work in New York”. I’m sure everyone has their struggle story. Just saying there’s rough then there’s actually living it day to day.
45k + OT is standard for GroupM entry level. 35k is WAY too low
Agreed I was an entry level GroupMer and made $40K
Wooooooooow that’s not feasible even if it was all cash. Sheesh.
Agree at least $45k with OT - also is there a way she can confirm there will be at least X number of OT per month? Ive seen people get in with OT promise but then told they can’t work any OT hours because the agency won’t pay overtime. I get being junior but a person has it eat ! Even with lowered rent in Manhattan it ain’t that cheap!
Does she have at least a year of experience in media? I might have a higher paying role for her
i did it for a year back in 2017-2018, also at an omnicom agency. $35k + OT. that’s the starting salary for a lot of entry level roles there with no room for negotiation. it’s ridiculous pay, but it’s doable. and not in the “my parents are giving me a $2k monthly stipend and paying for my apartment” way. i had no outside financial help.
i lived with 3 other roommates in bushwick paying <$1k in rent. space was a little tight, but one of those typical new builds with stainless steel appliances, exposed brick, etc. well maintained + a couple blocks from the subway. still went out to shows, partied, had dinners out every now and then, was able to afford normal groceries, and went on two vacations that year (that i fully paid for), and never accrued debt. didn’t contribute a single cent to my 401k, never took ubers, paid for the cheapest health insurance possible. you have to be really diligent with your money, but it can be done. i wouldn’t recommend it past a year because it’s not easy livin’, but omnicom tends to promote fast from the assistant level.
$35k per year is less than what some people make in entry-level positions in fields that don't even require a college degree, let alone advertising. And it's not that impressive that they're offering OT, since most agencies offer OT to their non-bonus-eligible employees. You can rest assured that the extra 20 hours of destroyed work-life-balance per week just to get an extra couple hundred bucks will get old real fast, if their PM will even approve it / not just give them 60 hours of work a week, tell them to only spend 40, and hope they work over the weekend without telling anyone so the account can preserve a profit margin based on bottom-bidding for a vanishing pool of marketing work in a marketplace that's increasingly turning to integrated solutions and the consultancies that offer them. Holy crap I can't believe this is what this industry is asking of new talent -- why would anyone go into advertising when they could have and easier time doing the same work for more money client-side?
As others have said, 45k is a reasonable starting point for many entry level white collar careers in NYC, and I personally would recommend they try to negotiate for 50k if they're a great candidate. I don't know what the hell you can do with 35k in this town.
Yeah even here in Chicago that’s way to low. Atleast 45/50k base. That’s what it was 6 years ago. So I’m sure it’s probably around 50/55k a year now. Would totally aim for 55k the worse that can happen is they say no and that’s when you haggle for what your worth. Next I would say 50k but that’s pushing it for me to survive. I wouldn’t take anything lower than 45k. To be honest.
How can any NYC company offer a salary that low? Shame on them.
Lol idk where all my other AAEs are but this post is crazy. I so wish it was higher but this is a very standard salary — I’m currently living in NYC (Hell’s Kitchen), with three roommates, on 35K plus overtime. No outside help from parents, still paying for my loans and saving money every month. So yes, doable.
Hate that I’m laughing with ya
Yup that was my first salary as an assistant buyer. Insane but people do it
Yikes! Way too low... $45 plus ot is better
I used to work at OMD and the entry level employees got $45k plus OT
Yes it must be different for programmatic. People I know who are strategist, video and display buyers at different agencies made 35k plus overtime. I almost always got overtime so I would say my salary was closer to 43K a year. I also got promoted after 8 months so it was worth.
The underpay in this industry is saddening and people wonder why only privilege people last. It’s really hard to not have a livable wage
absolutely WAY too low. I'd say $55k will get you by
I started my career in Stamford, CT (a little less than an hour outside of the city) at 45k. 35k is WAY too low for NYC proper.
That’s barely more than minimum wage. You’d have to have a lot of roommates and live in a crappy place unless you have family subsidizing you.
If she’s being considered, does that mean they haven’t made an actual offer? Once they make an offer, she should counter at 50, and hopefully meet somewhere in the middle.
Need to net out 55k at least with OT.
