Which country / region? That appears to be the case in UK. I’m a manger and was just approached for a role as Associate Director and was told it’s the same as senior manager. My concern is the role is aligned to risk consulting—not sure why a strategy consultant should be aligned to risk consulting.
On the back end, everything above manager and below partner is some grade of senior manager. Director, associate director and managing director are all promotions in title only.
It depends on which franchise you are joining, but in my franchise, under management consulting (not deals or Strat), the titles go:
Senior manager > director > partner
Associate and Managing director refer to contractor positions
In deals/strat: associate, sr. Associate, manager, senior manager, director, managing director, VP partner
This is not true at least for the US firm. At KPMG US, MD is a non-equity partner, Director maps exactly to senior manager (advisory has director while audit and tax have SM), and associate director is almost isolated to internal roles only and they should be below Director level.
MDs are not SMs. MD's can sign contracts for the firm. They are basically non-equity partners. Also MDs get offices. Director/SM does not.
Also don't go to RC. Not performing well.
S1, Might be different in the UK. My comment was for the US firm.
