At what point in your career did you feel ready to run a legal department? I often see in-house counsel roles where the lawyer would be the first—and sometimes only—legal hire, with requirements listed as low as 2+ years of experience. I don’t feel confident stepping into a role that effectively requires leading a legal function on my own at 3PQE. At roughly how many years of experience did you feel prepared for that level of responsibility, or are people mostly just faking it till they made it?

7-10 YOE, assuming a diverse background.

There’s just so many different areas that you need varying levels of familiarity/expertise.

It’s not just strictly the legal issues you’re running with unsupervised; a company’s top lawyer is senior leadership (C-suite level or 1 step below). You need to understand the business-side and deliver usable guidance.

@A1, learn from whom?

like

Places doing that fall into a couple general categories:

1-they mostly rely on outside counsel but they have some repeating work that would be CJ water to bring and can be handled by someone with only a couple YOE

2-the firm has somewhat realistic expectations and realizes that they can only afford someone at that YOE

3-the firm is in a “break now and fix later” mindset you will find that they’ve been operating with no counsel or AI counsel. Good luck

like

When you get the interview, definitely ask about the history of their legal department and whether they rely on outside counsel ever, when, and if the way they have has changed over the years. Will tell you a lot about how they would expect you to serve

I am a new (lateral) associate at a small firm where everyone currently works from the office. When I started, I wasn’t told specific firm hours. I’ve tried to figure out when to come and go based upon when the partners arrive and leave, but their schedules are very inconsistent. The other associates don’t have helpful guidance for me. Assuming that if I ask the partners they’ll say to use my discretion, what are reasonable hours to keep?
