Policy aside, consider waiting a bit to take the longer leave if you’ll have family helping around the birth. I found my presence was less helpful early on but crucial after all the family left.

Assuming the policy says you need a year of time before taking the leave, It’s up to the company if they want to give you the full 16 weeks. If you’ve been there the required amount if time, the insurance company pays your salary. If not, the company would eat the cost

You don’t have to take the leave right when the baby is born. So one option is to take a couple weeks around the time of the birth and the rest of the time later on once you have completed your year. But I’d say talk to your leadership on how you want to handle this. I’m sure they will be open to the discussion. Enjoy the time!
