Back when i worked at a thrift store , we had a customer who kept trying to swap price tags from cheap items onto designer clothes. I caught her in the act, and she just laughed and said, “Hey, it was worth a try!” I mean, come on if you’re going to try that move, at least be subtle about it! What’s the wildest thing you’ve caught a customer doing?

When I worked in retail, we had a regular customer who’d grab items off the shelf, head straight to the return desk, and claim she’d lost the receipt. Since store policy allowed store credit for returns under $50 without a receipt, she tried this often. We were specifically trained to say no to her. It was baffling. how could someone keep doing that, over and over?

like

Truly she has some challenges and couldn’t help it also her family should be watching her closely

Lol I've seen my own friends do this at thrift stores when I was in college. It's a silly thing to do because the difference is normally like less than $10, but I guess it's better that they're not outright stealing the item. The wildest thing I saw recently was a customer emptying beef jerky into their purse. They couldn't afford it but didn't want to steal the whole package. So hard to confront them because it was so awkward!!

like

That’s so awkward! It’s like, you know they’re struggling, but you also have a job to do.

like

LMBO! I mean can you blame her? Times are tough out here! Just kidding. I totally don't condone stealing, but her personality sounds funny. I once caught a customer who forgot she "tried on earrings" and I noticed when she went to walk out. I mean, at least your lady owned up to it.

likefunny

I agree. That’s definitely possible.

I think some people think that just because things are "donated" that they aren't really stealing. It's a strange sort of entitlement, I've heard other people say similar things and I don't really get it. We've definitely caught a few people trying to switch out the clothes they were wearing for a completely different outfit and thought we wouldn't notice. Little did they know that we have people whose entire job it is to notice.

Some can’t help it really that a habit

I had a guy go through checkout with like 10 small items in the main portion of his cart and a ton of things packed underneath it - a case of water, dog food, detergent, and probably 15 other things. He emptied the cart onto the conveyor belt and started trying to pay as soon as I'd scanned them. He then proceeded to act very annoyed when I mentioned the items below and acted like he'd somehow forgotten about them.

like

I’ve seen that too, act all rushed and “forget” half the cart. It’s frustrating when it’s clearly intentional, but you still have to play it cool.

I once caught a customer trying to sneak out with a half-eaten candy bar tucked into their jacket! They acted like it was no big deal, but dude, that’s just embarrassing. People really get creative when they think no one's watching and honestly, it makes for some wild stories behind the counter!

like

OMG that gave me flashbacks 😭 like dude, it’s a $1 chocolate bar, not worth the undercover mission!

I blame Macklemore ;)

I don't go in very often, but when I do, I am usually disappointed that the deals aren't better.

But that's probably just me. I hardly have the patience to go through a rack of product I enjoy anymore, much less something I just want to flip and make money on.

like

I didn't work there but I once saw a lady walk into a store (3 guesses to which one) in a towel with a shower cap, as if she just got out of the shower!

like

I would’ve thought I was hallucinating. People really treat stores like an extension of their living rooms sometimes.

like

Haha wow, bold and shameless! Gotta admire the confidence—even if the technique needs work. Retail really is a front-row seat to human behavior!

We had a lady fill up a buggy and just push it out the door. The door is right beside the register. When we confronted her she said she was gonna come back in and pay for it. But she was throwing it in her car as fast as she could.

Anyone feel frustrated at times with the super aggressive sales personalities we deal with? My AE is always pushing on every ask no matter how minuscule it is. My vp is super anal about anything we do. I understand these guys pull in huge commissions and bonuses that’s why they are so motivated. However what I personally feel is they just nag us until we do the job according to their spec. Just venting……anyone else feel the same?
