Happens. Keep your head up
I had a terrible first year as an attorney. The firm I was at was a terrible fit for me. I moved to a different firm and I’ve been there 8 years and was named a partner last year. Sometimes a firm just isn’t a good fit, and that’s ok.
I went into a different practice area
Thank you for all the kind words, everyone. I truly appreciate it.
Bad mentoring/training happens - more than you’d think. I have a friend who was hired as a Counsel at an AmLaw 200 firm. Her mentor was supposed to be a “nice guy” and everyone “envied” her - but he had a rough year because he lost his mother and was thinking about leaving the law altogether. I think he took a lot of those frustrations out on her. I used to read e-mails from him and I couldn’t figure out what he wanted my friend to do - and I had 15 years’ experience at that point. She, too, often guessed wrong, and if she asked for clarification was essentially told she was stupid. Near the end, he actually called her “nothing but a highly paid paralegal” to her face.
Today that friend is the General Counsel of a National company with over 10,000 employees. She’s one of the best attorneys I know. All she needed was a good mentor, good training, clarity in what was being asked of her, and experience.
Don’t count yourself out because of a bad experience at one firm.
