Purely based on the tone of your post as a recruiter I would be worried that you might not take ownership and will give up and leave when things get tough. Your message says: nobody mentored me, due to emergencies I wasn’t working… a lot of college students don’t have mentors, they use university recruiting centers to learn what to do and apply, internships while going to college count as experience, and even if you were not working: what did you learn that you can apply to a job while dealing with emergencies… flip the story to tell how YOU managed the life circumstances vs how external circumstances impacted you. There will always be hardships, the big difference is how different people handle them and can turn things around.
I would apply to every public accounting firm in your city. I would also go back to you university and use their job board to see if there are any positions you can do.
Most public accounting firms hire interns first and then bring them on full time, so there may not be a lot of positions. They also tend to hire for/at specific times - right now they would be hiring for January busy season.
You just need to get a job (public accounting is best) which will then start to open other doors for you.
You should be applying to everything you can get your hands on. Shotgun out applications to see what sticks. See if your university has career center services to help with resume building, mock interviews, open positions, etc. Most of these things sous have been better to take advantage as a student, but they may have services for alumni too.
The job market is tough for everyone out there, so stay positive, maintain a good attitude, and being proactive.
How can you be a CPA with zero experience? Are you saying that you have passed the exams but have not yet been licensed due to lack of experience?
I wouldn't mention family emergencies or lack of mentorship. Many people have family emergencies, there are full time employees sleeping in their cars for a variety of reasons beyond their control in this day and age, yet they don't breathe a word at work, lest they be unjustly judged. It sounds cruel, but that's the state of our collective mentality. As for mentorship, once you are hired, you would want to approach someone you respect at work to see if they would be open to mentoring you. This type of relationship isn't for connections or what they might be able to do for you - it should be someone you admire professionally. Finally, the job market is brutal and there are professionals who have been applying for more than a year who are still coming up empty-handed, so it's another unfortunate sign of the times and you're going to need to develop resilience and initiative. Some interviewers are open to giving you interview feedback, while others aren't; that said, it might be wise to reach out to the last ones and ask if they would be willing to give you professional feedback. Ultimately, the expectation is that you take initiative with no excuses.
