It’s one of the best places in the world to be a fresh out of undergrad kid...
No downside...if she doesn’t like it quit with BCG on her resume
If she has a better alternative now then consider that, otherwise jump in with both feet
Totally agree with BCG4 - one of the best possible places to start a career. No brainer IMO
Honestly, experiences range from very bad to very good. It truly depends on who she ends up working with and what kind of projects she ends up on.
Overall, culture is outwardly friendly (but not uncommon to be stabbed in the back during a review process), wlb is ehh..could be better, but it’s consulting, what do you expect? Day to day tasks vary depending on project...usually it’s doing analyses and churning out slides...
I’ve had a generally great experience in 8+ years here. There are rough moments WLB wise of course but no worse than any high pressure job and arguably on par or better than most (my comp is banking and other MBB based on my friends experiences). It is very people dependent of course but I think most folks want to do a good job and make things go as well as possible for everyone. The sense of being backstabbed is very rare - I always knew what was coming review wise even when it wasn’t the strongest review
BCG is not some sort of nirvana. It has its faults and it’s hard work but I honestly don’t think there’s a better place to start your career. I’m super jealous of those that started straight out of undergrad
Two years and BCG is one the best first work experiences a human could have. A massive learning experience. She should jump on it.
Coming to BCG is a no-regrets move, as long as she is prepared to work hard and learn fast. If she’s planning to come just for the brand name she will be miserable and fail. Future employers aren’t stupid.
BCG has been a phenomenal employer for me. I’ve worked in several companies before and this is by far the most caring and authentic place. People are genuinely nice and business has been so strong that there is plenty of opportunity. I really like it here and will stay as long as they let me.
What is she comparing it to?
If I didn’t love the people and the work, I wouldn’t be here. In fact, they’d pay me for 6 months to leave
It is also very dependent on the office and System she’s going to
Thanks all! She’d be in the Denver office if that helps or makes any kind of difference
Denver office doesn’t do a ton of local work, so she should be prepared to travel a lot. Denver is part of the south system so most of her work will likely be in that region, especially Texas. The south has a bit of a rep for not the best WLB among BCG offices in North America but I would still echo that for an ambitious young person out of undergrad it is an excellent opportunity.
BCG2 hit nail on the head. My experience was all over the place depending on project/manager/client. I’m glad I started my career in tech and quickly went back to it because the pay was same and hours/autonomy were better, but it really depends on her background and career aspirations.
What office?
Why is the McKinsey guy/gal singing for BCG here?
