That’s an extra expense, so just budget that in. As long as you are around most of year, it’s good
Go for it, everything works out in the end (with reason).
All of my family is half way across the country and my wife and I find ways to make it work. It’s added responsibility but when you make that relationship with your dog it’s worth it.
Life’s too short to hesitate on things like this. 10 years from now there’s no world where you’ll regret getting a dog.
Finding trustworthy dog sitting is hard. Some boarding places don't take many breeds. It is a huge commitment with vet care costs and dogsitting, but saving a dog from the shelter is worth it. Assume vet care for a healthy dog, in a big city, is about $1000 a year. Consider pet insurance. But if you think you're ready for it, yes, save a dog from the shelter.
If you rent, many cities make it hard to get apartments with any dog, especially certain breeds. Take this into account too please. Many dogs end up in shelter because landlords don't permit them.
Also hard to find a reputable dog boarding nearby. Check around and see. Most dog boarding places have some sort of problem which could result in more expenses for healthcare, make sure to factor those in your budget too. Rover I’ve seen people who’ve had issues even with highly rated individuals
A lot can go into it but of course under those circumstances. Things to consider really are probably more based around work - are you in office/do you travel? Are you willing to invest into the dog - so much time and rescues may need additional professional training. Breed wise - make sure it’s conducive to your lifestyle, if you’re in an apartment and don’t have trails near you, should probably focus on lower energy breeds, etc
I have had big dogs in small apartments. That does not matter. If you commit to walking the dog sufficiently, they definitely don't need much space. A small apartment is better for a shelter dog than euthanization, always.
How far is this other state that your parents live in? Can you road trip with the pup? I personally love road tripping with my dog.
It’s doable if only a handful of times a year!
You don’t have to do Rover. There are licensed bonded and insured dog walkers and pet sitters who are trustworthy. Once you get a dog you can get referrals for these type of things via your vet, groomer, etc. Be aware that having a pet is a major responsibility and you will need to provide for four walks per day (some of which you can do yourself), food, vet care, etc. it’s a major expense. You may also need to pay for training. An average vet bill for us is $1000 and this is frequent. We also are in HCOL area. Our pup is nearing 15 yrs old, we rescued her and she was in an abusive environment previously. It’s worth all the time energy and expense.
Don’t get a pet. Do you not need to travel for work in addition to your family travel? And maybe you don’t now, but how about in future? It will add up very quickly and it is a commitment for many years…
