It's pretty straightforward actually:
-pull your job description, list out the ways you accomplish those tasks
-pull the promotion criteria or the job description at the next level, list out the ways you accomplish portions of those tasks
-then for any of the big stuff, either make a plan to demonstrate aptitude or to start executing those things
- take all the documentation to your manager and have the conversation and get their feedback on your self-assessment as well as your plan.
- tell them you want to be promoted and would like their support.
- from there pay very close attention, a good manager will help you. A bad manager will make excuses.
- if you have the latter, then you need to make connections at the next level up and grow your network of supporters to circumvent them (once you start working your plan).
Good luck and remember your career is always your to own!
Tell your boss that you want to start leveling up. Tell them what you’re doing to try and demonstrate your experience / willingness to learn then ask what you can do better.
At the end of every day I always (consulting to corporate) ask my boss if they’re good and if they need anything. Same with people on my team.
No need to keep it a secret. Be open about what you want and ask what you need to demonstrate consistently in order to get there.
