What level roles are you looking for? It sounds like you’re doing very well at your current agency and are far beyond your four years of experience post college. Without other info my guess is that you’re shooting for the moon with the roles you’re applying for at other agencies. Unfortunately it doesn’t matter that you *could* lead accounts at a larger agency. Four years of experience is considered VERY junior most places. If you really want to go to a larger agency or in house somewhere you’ll have to accept a smaller role, blow them away, and rise up in the ranks that way. I know it sucks to hear but it’s unfortunately the reality. What you’re describing is exactly why smaller agencies are appealing to many.
Just one caveat on the political consulting: When you pick your new employer/party, be very sure that it’s the one you want to work with for the foreseeable future.
R’s do not like working with D’s consultants, and vice versa.
Networking and connecting with people will be your best way to get your foot in the door. In terms of your resume, I’d recommend adding hard numbers / metrics to further demonstrate your impact.
A few examples: Manage $x budget; program exceeded KPIs by X%; press coverage drove $X in revenue; found efficiencies in financial process, saving $X annually; stemming from campaign, searches for brand increased by X%; brand mentions on social increased by X%, etc.
Would emphasize the client work.
IDT anyone would really care about the agency you work for as long as you can show the big fish it attracted and the work you did in the account. Also present successes.
Where are you located?
My recommendation would be to have your LinkedIn set to open to knee roles, and make sure your profile is optimized (adding key words you your job description, etc) so recruiters see you. I HATE LinkedIn but I swear it’s the only way to get to any recruiters these days
*new roles
I personally have been getting bites from recruiters, this has worked for me but agree the job market right now is tough. Would keep your eye out and things will work out eventually. Don’t leave where you are until you land something else.
