How often does your billable time get written off? Does it affect your hours vis-a-vis meeting yearly requirements and bonus? Tips for minimizing write offs and partners who ask you not to bill time?
Ladies, do y’all enter time for emails? If yes, are y’all billing it to the client or as a non-billable time entry
Anyone gone from 1900 to 2000 billable hours required? It’s for more money but I’m scared.
My law firm gives me a report that breaks down the amount of billable hours collected compared to how much I’ve been paid on a monthly basis. Does anyone else’s firm do this? At what point do you think it’s acceptable to ask for a bonus/raise?
Looking for a comparison to what other firms are offering and how this one stacks up. Ours is working out a brand new bonus structure:
Our general targets are 75% util. Billable or qualified non-billable time. Bonuses will be $1000 per quarter just meeting that. $25/ hr for every billable hour beyond that on top.
Is it possible to work in tax while only working 40-45 hours per week? I like tax and learning about it, but I cannot keep up with the billable hours and constantly being in busy season.
Is it just me or the average billable work in infrastructure transactions has blown off steam in the last couple of weeks?
First gen lawyer here (not that that really impacts the question/post) but I see all these posts about entering billable time and appropriate descriptions (mostly in big law or other practice areas). How often do people here run into clients requesting meetings to have their bills explained or refusing to pay certain work? Are you small, mid-size, big law, and who in your firm is tasks with these explanation meetings?
Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!
Laughing in billable hours
Smaller Firm Question - how long do you give associates to start making a profit (i.e. doing sufficient billable time that is collectible) before you begin with warnings or termination?
Scenario: 1 Senior associate transferred laterally but did not bring business (this was known), 1 Junior is 3 months in, but seems unable to bill even his own salary, no less enough to cover other overhead. I am billing more than both combined (both hours and $$) and it is driving me crazy.
I am a 10 yr lawyer. 7 yrs in my practice area. Little over a year at current firm. Still an associate. Im at large plaintiff firm w/ billable requirements. I do mass/class cases and hold a couple leadership positions (these were competitive to get). What should salary be and when should I make partner. I’ll add I work remote and pretty autonomously. Little contact with partners or anyone at my firm.
Any thoughts on Maron Marval? Specifically their Texas office regarding workload, salary range and 1950 billable hours?
Has anyone transitioned from Tax to RM? Could you share your experience and pros/cons of the change? Really want to get out of client facing/billable work, but I like my firm. Thank you!
So I got 2 offers, 1 at a well-known firm (that I previously worked at, not as an atty) that offered 80K plus full benefits (100% health coverage, PTO, sick days, discretionary bonus & 1800 billable req.) Their a little old school in their methods but I do see the younger gen. coming in to make changes. 2nd offer is at a newer firm however i’ve heard great things, and they offered 80k, unl. PTO, 1500 billable hours, bonus incentives qrtrly, & 50% health ins. WHY can’t I make a decision? HELP
When your boss gives you 48 hours (clock hours not billable hours) to produce a viable objection to a MTD/compel arbitration in a complex commercial lit case, which is not my practice area, what kind of result is he expecting? From scratch, no template.
What's up everyone? I saw a salary survey posted earlier. What do y'all think I should make at a litigation boutique that handles primarily business litigation on a contingency fee? No billable hours.
The recent most billable hours post, inspired me. What is your longest billable day? Mine was 56 hours straight with no break—and the partner was more than a jerk when I was saying no more at the 30 hour point. That was two 24 hour billable days back to back on my time sheet and on the bill, a 360 hour month, and 650 aggregated for two months. And it is one reason (of so many reasons) why this job can suck so much! At least I got a good bonus...
Has anyone EVER billed a day/a week/whatever and had someone question them on exactly what project they worked on and what they did?
I’ve been with my wife for a decade now and missed online dating. I feel super lucky because dating sounds like it SUUUCCCCKS. What are single people out there experiencing?
Looking for a new moisturiser + tonic + cleanser + serum (?). I’m 25 yo and have been using Clinique for years but want to try something new. Help!
Which firms have good Muslim Networks? I'm liking what I am seeing from EY in the UK - where else has a good internal Muslim Network?
Hey all just FYI my psych told me in my appointment that stimulants ordered from Express Scripts often give patients problems...including me. Felt like I was taking something totally different.
Facebook interviewer stated he wants to interview me for a “Mid” level role. Is it IC4 or IC5?
Currently looking for Tech consulting/ Implementation consultant/ privacy roles in London. I have both CIPP/E and CIPM.

Best books to read when starting your own business, but also embody imposter syndrome & validation issues. Anything from self-help, psychology & business is welcome. TY x
What is the process to switch from tech to S&O competency? Do you need to re-interview or anything like that?
First day of distance learning, both spouse and I spent 3 hours each troubleshooting. Kids got maybe 30 minutes of connected time of the 3 1/2 scheduled hours
Is anyone a program or project manager at an agency that doesn’t have an account layer? Do you think this model works? Do you share the responsibilities with other team members?
Recently finished a book called “becoming yellow” that discusses how East Asians’ skin colour ended up being labeled as “yellow” even though it’s usually far from it. Highly recommend! Did not know it was a product of European ignorance and racism
I shared an intermediate workout program (Back/Legs/Arms&Shoulders/Leg/Chest split) with a few friends the other day and figured I could also share it with others if interested.
It’s a program I follow outside of my 12-16 training block preps, and if anyone wants, I can share it with them. It’s for strength training.
Also happy to explain what any of the exercises are if someone wants the workouts and doesn’t know the benefit or how to do them.
Feel free to DM me about it
Any recommendation on a good standing desk ?
Partially drunk but bored and looking at the indexes (before / after) covid… are we screwed or what? Only thing that changed was free money (now regretting not selling early) or should believe that all things will be fine in 5-10 years
Would love Florida resort suggestions for family vaca during week of Jan 1. Wife and I are looking to take our three young kids somewhere warm in the US. Thought about Mexico but don’t have passports and don’t have time to get them. I’m not too familiar with FL. Assume we need to go as south as possible for warm weather. Can you suggest family friendly resorts that are still luxurious (budget not an issue)? Ideally with Caribbean like beach.
Ok, let’s do an advertising version of the other post. What’s an ad and/or campaign you like that most everyone else seems to hate?
9/22 check-in: Good morning, y’all! What are your plans for today?
For me, I hope to get in a walk after this meeting.

I need help with what my next career move should be! I’m a 3rd year complex lit associate at a V50 firm moving to a Midwest city with limited biglaw options. I’m very interested in white collar and employment law, but they’re very different with different career trajectories. I have more experience in white collar but have always been interested in employment. I don’t want to lose the complex cases big law offers — will I even get those kinds of cases at a firm like Littler? (More below)
What does it mean to be in good standing?
I had absolutely nothing to do in the past few days at work and it’s driving me crazy!!!!!
Partners, do you care if associates don’t ask for work? I’m slow right now but work in a small office of a v50 so the partners know my availability. Y’all know where to find me.
Sent an email to the other side with our client CC’ed. client emails me back irate that I sent that email without his express authorization. He has a right to be mad as I was told to get confirmation from him before sending by the partner but I misunderstood and sent the email. Apologized to client and deal team. Deal team said it’s fine, just don’t repeat it. I feel terrible. 2nd year.
When marking up a document, do you put your comments/NTDs in footnotes or comment bubbles? Let me know your practice area :) This is a matter of great derision among my partners.
Writing sample questions: what’s an ideal writing sample for a lateral position? Been requested to provide a brief on a non procedural issue.
It’s my first lateral move and I’m not quite sure about what they want.
What are the pros and cons of a specializing in a public company advisory/SEC reporting practice, as opposed to pure capital markets?
My team is great and includes me in activities, like dep prep, in which I’m unlikely to contribute hugely given that I’m a junior. But how can I get over feeling completely useless during such activities? I get really anxious and feel like I’m not contributing/wasting the firm’s money
Going to pass the 100 hour threshold after 2 very slow months. Celebrate the small things!
If a major big law firm lowered their annual billable target significantly (like maybe to 1750), would other firms follow? Would it be the most popular firm recruiting-wise?
Is M&A or PE a better practice group? Currently in PE but contemplating making the switch to M&A. My M&A colleagues tell me it’s a *little less hectic working with public companies as apposed to PE firms.
Looking to lateral into a fully remote ECVC role to have more flexibility to move closer to family and to hopefully have a better work life balance. However, I was told by my recruiter that Cooley, Gunderson, and Goodwin said they’re not offering remote roles in ECVC at this time. For some context, I’m class of 2019 coming from a V10 with M&A and CapM experience. Anyone hearing or seeing similar things? Curious if fully remote is no longer offered as much or if the ECVC market has slowed.
Lateraled several months ago and not having much success getting hours. Tried reaching out to various associates and partners and usually get that they’ll keep me in mind. Practice area is slow and holidays are here, but definitely frustrating bc I’m ready to work. Do I just keep pushing?
