OP, I say go with your gut. Mine says hard pass, but that is just me and I have not met this person....
More info: They have a valid drivers license. We drink (too much) and bc 3 of us have ADHD (ok all do but only 3 diagnosed) we have Adderall in the house. Candidate said this is not an issue and having booze around is not a trigger. Candidate also said they started a low dose of anxiety meds that is life changing. Has held a government teaching job (not at school) and worked in after care & tutoring for the last 6 years and is only looking because candidate is also immunocompromised and doesn’t feel safe working in large classrooms anymore, also their hours are getting cut because of decreased use of the services. I’m not worried about the past stuff; I have had plenty of friends with past mistakes/histories of substance abuse. My only worry would be if the substance abuse was something with huge recidivism or the kind that leads to terrible relapses/theft/violence/crazy unpredictable stuff like meth/heroin; not sure how to ask that question exactly. The Colorado Meth Project ads scared me :) Also, I’m asking you strangers bc if we hire the candidate we are not going to mention any of this to family/friends.
What can you do to mitigate risk? Lock up medications, alcohol, and valuable?
We definitely can do that. I’m not too worried about valuables bc we have so few.
I assume they had references. Have you followed up on those to see what recent behavior has been like? Did the person disclose why they were an alcoholic (stress of a demanding job, spouse issues, or something else)? I know people who have used alcohol to deal with something specific in their lives, but once that thing was removed, they were fine. I would put everything under lock and key and give it a shot if you like everything else about this person. I think it was very big of this person to be up front with you about it.
Are you and your spouse working from home or will the nanny be alone with the children? And how old are the kids? I think the fact that she disclosed it is a very positive sign. Two years sober is a long time. The truth is anyone you hire can have issues that you may never know about. I don’t think this is a deal breaker and I appreciate her honesty. And you said she came highly recommended. I wouldn’t have her administer medication to the kids but other than that I think you’re fine. I also imagine you’re not going to have her drive the kids anywhere right now anyways so you can take the time to get to know her.
Update: we were going to offer her the job but she got scooped :(
