Billed 70 hours this week already. I'm prepping for a two week trial with two dozen witnesses by myself. I can't do this anymore. Give me your tips for getting through because the partner just keeps piling on instead of finding me help (and I have been very blunt about needing help).

Can you find your own help? Delegate to juniors and paralegals on the more mundane / straightforward stuff etc?

Be there. The trick is to only do a few trials a year.

I want a job where I do nothing but trials. I LOVE trials!

Can you delegate yourself to anyone like another associate or paralegal? Like some of the other tasks. Or can you use a firm approved AI to prep witness outlines based on depo transcripts or something.

You have to be candid about what you can manage and do at a level you feel comfortable working at. I used to tell the partner I tried cases with when I’m at capacity and I would say something like: it’s time for you to use your partner powers and get these things assigned to someone else to handle. If we don’t figure out who is gonna do this, it likely may not get done.

You have to be your own advocate right now because no one else is going to protect you. Set your boundaries, make sure you’re doing what you need to make it to trial. That means letting people know what you can and cannot take on. Hope that helps!

M/SM and above, why do you label a meeting as “touch point” or ask if you can have a “quick chat” when it’s something serious? Millennials like us always assume we’re about to get fired - I actually have been laid off in a meeting with that title. But at my new job, my boss asked for a “quick chat” to literally ask me to change the title of a meeting and then chat about christmas. Now that I’m in management, I want to understand it better.

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
