Boss taking credit for your work?

Is it typical for the GC to take credit for work done by his team? I’ve begun a relatively new role and I’ve noticed that the GC will ask me to do something and then he will take it and make minimal or no changes and then just copy me when he sends it to the requester but doesn’t mention that I did the work.

Is this normal in your experience? Or should he be saying Senior Counsel put this together.

As the GC, my view is you share credit and accept blame. I know enough law to be dangerous so thankfully I have my team.

It's normal. The legal department is usually treated like a monolith by other departments. Output is treated like it came from "legal" rather than one specific person within legal.

It happens. However, in my experience, this is a sign of poor leadership. A good leader shares credit and allows their team to shine.

Echoing. The business lines what "legals" opinion. Just make sure you're keeping good notes/records for review time. The GC does your review, not the other depts. So if your analysis leads to a significant business result highlight that and what you contributed.

Thats normal. You work for the GC. They are who you need to impress.

Welcome to Corporate America.

Does the GC take accountability for mistakes, too?

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

After you moved in-house, how did you get more comfortable reviewing contracts or counseling on issues you weren’t super familiar with? I was very specialized at my law firm and took a similarly specialized role in-house….but I still get requests to mark-up types of agreements that I never touched at my firm. I’ve been trying to find CLEs to get up to speed, but I’m wondering if this is generally something that gets more comfortable with time…
