Former enlisted here. Got out, got to top 2-3 undergrad business program. Got to PwC.
First he should think about what he really wants to do. Account/finance or IT.
Second, and as important, if not more. Put all his attention on school. He can leverage his service to get into a top school. Top schools want more veterans represented on their campuses, for a variety of reasons, optics, especially they’re getting heat for admitting so few, genuine appreciation, etc.
So have him solidify a list of his target schools. Then find out what he needs to do to get there and then make a plan.
Columbia is most military friendly of Ivy’s. USC is super military friendly. Some Ivy’s are allowing transfers for the first time ever (or in many years) so the majority of veterans aren’t closed out from the beginning.
Then he needs to learn to leverage his story into an asset that can get him where he wants to be
I feel like Accenture and Microsoft would be a good place to start
Do both accounting and IT and come do SAP work
I recommend data science, AI and analytics with a finance specialty. IT and business are both deeply involved with those solutions. He can start by finishing an associates degree in that discipline, start working, and pursue a BS when he can if he prefers.
Former military here, my recommendation would be stay in, do the degree while in the service, retire after 20, collect pension. By that point he'll know the mfg reps for the equipment and can slide into a job with them training military personnel how to work and maintain the equipment. I have a couple friends doing this now. Total pay between the pension and salary is serious money.
SAP work currently sold out probably until 2022. Pay is good. He might have to work some insane hours since everyone cares if they can’t book an invoice but no one cares if some nice to have analytics aren’t working
Second p2 in that he needs to think about school first. If he can get into a top school, nearly any company/industry will be an option for him
Current reservist here. There is no such thing as a pension in the military nowadays, only the blended savings plan. Don’t take the advice of Capgemini 1. The Army will take take and take. It almost never gives so get out and take advantage of what you can - your service. Best thing he can do now is max his SAT - send him some books to study whenever he has downtime.
Does he already have a college degree?
Is he an officer or listed?
No, he has about 50 credit hours from a community college. He’s planning to go full time at a top school after his enlistment is up
... he currently works in IT. Fixes radios and computers (I think). Also manages the help desk.
@D1, How’s the pay?
