Called in sick today, and somehow it felt less like a sick day and more like I was standing in court, pleading my case. Since when did being human turn into a crime at work? We’re expected to be bulletproof, sleepless, immune to germs like productivity machines with no off switch.

Does anyone else feel you need to apologize just for taking care of yourself?

No. Thankfully my management has been supportive. Maybe it's because I rarely ever take sick days. I do get colds and such, but have rarely had to take days off for flu, COVID, or other issues. And have always worked overtime, etc. So when I do take them, they know it's because I'm really sick and the work will still end up get done one way or another (most often by me when I'm sick or by working extra long hours when I return in cases where I have been a one-person department).

Maybe your management stinks. Or maybe it comes down to PTO policy at your entity (at a prior job, managers or above didn't get a set number of vacation or sick days, and the firm covered it if you asked and got approval, so they did ask a few questions to assess legitimacy - not that I support this kind of policy and prefer for a set number of days to be assigned and used as desired/needed).

It can also come down to history. If someone often asks for sick days off, it could raise suspicion, whether for legitimate reasons or not. Years ago, my mom (a former nurse with serious health issues), got fired by her for-profit hospital for calling in sick too much (and she was legitimately sick). Then again, I have a good friend who calls in sick just when he was up too late the night before and is too tired to work the next morning, not because he is sick (he uses his sick days, and his manager never questions it).

So either your current management sucks, their current PTO policy is too unstructured, or then you are one who has called in too often in the past and have raised suspicions against you, whether for legitimate or illegitimate reasons.

All options are true lets put it that way!

I’ve got about 20 years cross channel experience in marketing, split between big brands and startups, and I’m considering pivoting into a data science/data analyst role. I know it will initially be a step back in comp but is it at all realistic for a person with certificate level experience in data analysis but a decent marketing management background to expect $150-200k comp or is that mostly for degreed candidates (or not realistic at all)? Any guidance here is greatly appreciated.
