Can you tell your firm’s politics? I feel like my firm is toxic because why am I constantly having to balance the politics at play when I’m just a fucking first year? I can’t reach out to certain partners for work because my partners will get mad at me type shit. Is this normal?

Less of a firm by firm thing and more of a partner by partner thing. Many partners are like this even with juniors

like

Gotcha, yes this makes sense

Be patient and work on what the partners want you to work on. It’s too early to be selective. You’re essentially a commodity at this point, from the partners’ point of view. That’s not disrespectful or bad. They just don’t know you or your abilities and just need a first year to do first year things. The situation will improve when the next 1st year class arrives in a few months and becomes the commodity work force. At that point you will gain more freedom to see out partners you want to work with and matters you want to work on.

I am a business development manager in a small biotech incubator. My end goal is to work in commercial, BD or operations within a big pharma/biotech company. What would be best for me:

1) stay in my company to quickly become BD Director and then exit (however my learning opportunities within my current company might be limited)
2) go do consulting for a few years
3) any other recommendations?

Thanks!

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

Explain to me like I’m 5. Why does the monthly billable hours goal on things like Intellistat change month to month. I’m not hitting hours this year. Last month goal was 158. This months goal is 180.

Why do firms fire people with low but still profitable hours? I am in my first full year on track for pretty low hours (~1500) but the actual realized fees (after writedowns) are still double my yearly salary. Is it because firms know they could replace someone like me with an equivalent attorney who would bill more?
