Home grown is at least 10 years to SM, 2 as an A, 2 as a C, 3 as an SC, 3 as a M, which is normal to fast. We don’t bring people in from the outside at the same level and pace that we promote internally. In HC, they would come in as a M
Not sure if you would be placed as a SM. I would expect M based on the above. I am part of the HC practice. At an M level with the above, I would guess 150-175
How does 10 years client facing experience not get you SM
I wouldn't want to come in as an SM. You'll have no network to staff your projects or help you with pursuits, you're going to have to hope you latch on to a good ppmd fast that can help you with that.
Folks a Practice Lead at Slalom is equal to a 5-7th yr SM in a large practice at big4 or a 1st yr MD in a smaller practice.

Yeah Deloitte does have a tendency to hire below level, but I think OP could get SM. Depending on city probably 160-220.
I interviewed at D HC with 10 years consulting experience including 2 years at M level. They offered me SC. I took the offer and after 2 years got M. Another year from now and I’ll get SM which will be 15 years Consulting experience.
Op- if you're Slalom, PL at Slalom is DEFINITELY SM or higher at the other firms. The levels at Slalom are very screwed up. They take former SM's from big 4 in as consultant in some offices and SP/PC in other offices. I had seen MD's from Big4 go in as PADs. Don't undervalue yourself because of folks here who don't know how slalom levels map.
I was at Deloitte- brought in at M level with 10 years. I got a bit of the short end of the stick and looking back would have pushed for SM. Know that experienced hires have a horrible time in Deloitte Consulting. There are actually really horrible statistics regarding turnover with experienced hires. Push for SM and don’t take less. Push for the higher salary range as well. Good luck!
If less than 180K slam the phone on recruiter.
Wow... that’s awesome that OP achieved Practice Lead with only 10 yrs experience then. I’m a SM2 at Deloitte with almost 14 years experience and a top 5 MBA that I took a year and a half off for. It sounds like I’m behind!
People have to stop thinking about "years at level" those guidelines are there because it's about how long the average person takes to develop their skills at those levels and grow into/be ready for the next level. There are people out there who do t fit the mold and develop at a faster pace. Just because you may not be one of them doesn't mean you should hold others back who are able to advance faster.
Thank you everyone! The feedback has provided a lot of great insights that I am applying to this potential change. Hope everyone is having a great day!
SM3 here in HC with 15 years experience. I agree with the person who said it’ll be very hard to be successful coming in as an SM. We very rarely bring in external SMs. You need time to get to know the firm and build a network.
SM is really really hard to come into without a network and a brand. People do it but most are gone in a year I’d rather knock it out of the park for 2 years at M, and take 3 years at SM, rather than struggle through 5 years at SM. But either way I wouldn’t take it if you don’t want to be at D long term- not worth it
I am part of the HC practice and that is not true here. I know people that get 1s every year (for non Deloitters, top 10%) and are still promoted at the rate posted on our intranet. They might be the low end of a promotion range if applicable but still in the range. That is one of my struggles with the firm is even if you are working at the next level but you don’t have your time in, we hold you back. I have seen a lot of good people leave because of that.
Well that's a cultural issue at Deloitte or your practice. My guidance was to the people posting on this threat and telling Op what he/she is worth or maps to in terms of a level based on years of experience/at level. Capability and skill sets are what you should be negotiating on- not age and years at level. Every one of us has seen the unicorn early 30s MD/partner- it's possible. Don't let others hold you back. Don't let yourself hold you back. Just don't screw over others going after what you want, practice good karma, have confidence in yourself and you'll be fine.
Slalom?
What practice are you M1? Maybe I need to leave HC
