If you can deal with days shifted early it’s pretty great. Flights are long if you consistently have to be onsite, but when you’re working remotely it’s very early days followed by getting off with an afternoon and evening actually worth enjoying. I usually run my work day from around 5 AM - 4 PM. I’m in the pool by 4:15 most days and it has dramatically improved my life.
I agree, working east coast clients from west coast has improved my life as well!
Not a consultant but moved from Connecticut to LA five years ago. We love it. I can’t imagine going back to the East Coast and lived there most of my life.
We bought in the South Bay Area which is the beach cities (Manhattan Beach, Hermosa, Redondo, Palos Verdes). It’s close to LAX and a ton of young friendly people. Great schools when you decide to have kids. A ton of yoga and coffee spots.
Pros
-Climate
- Outdoor Activities (hiking, beach, tennis, golf)
- cultural
- People are more friendly
- very work from home friendly
Cons
- Traffic
- Crime
- Housing costs ($1000 sq ft)
- Taxes
- long flight to visit relatives
Moved 3 years ago but wasn’t in the industry until after moving out here. My firms office is smaller here so it’s mostly remote when not traveling. Not a ton huge community locally but you can seek it out. Friends are harder to make here if you don’t already have a group or know some people who can introduce you. There are different things like meet ups and run clubs though and mutual friends setting you up with people they know are great ideas to get started too.
Work wise, I personally love the hours. Early starts and can usually get offline in the early afternoon and workout or go run errands. Downside is sometimes the early mornings are really early (5-6am) depending on the client and/or if you have to meet with anyone overseas.
Agreed that making friends in LA is not as easy as making friends in NYC but LA does have a community if you look for it! Venice Run Club has been a popular way to meet new people
