Corporate first year in biglaw here. Since wfh began, I’ve been extremely unmotivated to do anything. I’m not sure if I’m depressed or just unhappy with my job. I really enjoy some of the work, but biglaw expectations can still seem so trivial. Especially now. Do any other first years relate? Do any experienced attorneys feel a wfh burnout? Work is slow, but I procrastinate so much. I can’t make myself care, though. Generally feel very off. I worry people are noticing and I’ll be fired.

Yeah, I experienced the same thing. I’d recommend putting on a mask and dress clothes and going into your office for a day. See how you feel then. I did it and I felt so much better. I work in the office several days a week now and it feels safe because the place is normally totally empty.

I like AA1’s suggestion. Also, you know if you are off. Don’t hesitate to talk to a professional about depression if you think that’s a possibility. These are strange and stressful times, and if it is depression, it is not your fault and doesn’t mean you are weak. The sooner you talk to someone, the sooner they can help you.

I 100 percent agree with you. I thought I hated law for years. When I finally took three months off and did therapy and got treatment for depression it was like night and day. I still have off days like all of us but I am enjoying it again.

If it doesn’t make you jump up or at least feel some semblance of purpose, the job may not be right for you.

Nah, this is not fair. First year transactional is very hard, few perks, often being reminded you are only pseudo-part of the team....

You will likely start to like corporate when there is a new class below you and you feel as though you know some stuff. Hang in there!!!!

I also feel like this and have been dealing with ongoing severe depression basically since January (I started as a first-year remotely in October). I’m also concerned about my prospects and review. Not much advice to offer, just letting you know you’re not the only one. Hang in there.

I have a promising interview at a relatively large law firm in my area (+100 attorneys) next week. The position is for a transactional role in their real estate practice group, and they are seeking someone with at least 2 YOE. I have a bit over 7 YOE with a strong real estate/commercial lit. background. Over the past two years in my current position, I've been doing a lot more transactional work. The split is around 50% transactional and 50% lit.
