Could greatly benefit from some real life experience or advice here - if anyone here has gone from big law to in-house, can you please describe your experience? How did you go about finding that role? Was the change worth it? Particularly helpful if you practiced commercial lit while at a firm and whether that influenced your in-house job search, performance, etc.. happy to hear everything and anything. Thanks!

My personal experience:

1. Multiple rounds of interview (met everyone on legal team and many people in leadership) taken over several weeks and v technical discussions of what I did at law firm

2. Recruiter (tbh didn’t like mine so pick wisely). If you have been in big law for a few years, recruiters actively reach out w inhouse opps.

3. Pros. I work 9-530 w an actual lunch break (no one eats lunch at their desk). I rarely look at phone outside those hours and never look during vacations. Love my team - everyone is very nice!

Cons. Pay is less than big law and less flexibility in terms of what time you come in and leave. I am 5 days in office w some wfh days.

For in-house, you really need to look at the team composition and culture because it’s not big law where if you don’t like a partner, there are other partners to work with. My friends who didn’t like their inhouse experience and went back to law firm typically (1) did not like the people they worked w, (2) found the work less interesting and (3) little bit of an ego thing since at a law firm, you are revenue generator and inhouse, you are a cost.

Conclusion: I am v happy making 6 pm dinner appointments and being in bed by 9 pm.

4. Not in commercial lit. In corporate

A coworker asked me to do something, I should have questioned it but did it because I trusted their seniority. I got called out for it by our boss on an email. Should I say something? I am planning to apologize to my boss and mention I’ll run it by them next time. But not sure if I should mention I had checked with my coworker who was in charge of that area.

From reading a number of books and listening to a number of podcasts about starting a business, one underlying factor they all share is to have deep passion for what you do. How do you know what your passion is? I mean I think a lot about golf but i don’t think that’s a passion. It’s my hobby. I think most people just know.

Hi Parent 🐠 in Greater Boston area. Our kid is going to be 4 soon and we are trying to decide the right school district to move to. Any location recommendations? Any guiding principles? Any thoughts on public vs private school? Thank you!

Hi All,
I am feeling lost in job. So I’ve applied for Accounts payable they offered 40k. I said why not to gain some experience. I didn’t even bother negotiating which I regret.
Fast forward I noticed that I was eventually handed everyone’s workload (AR & imports & duty and check coworker work + AP) Spoke to them about pay increase based on workload. So they raised it to 55k.. but I still feel underpaid based on the amt of work I do. I don’t know what my title or what to put on resume..

How much stock do you put on benefits? I have two offers with stark differences in benefits. Job 1: role I want, but benefit sucks (2 weeks paternity leave, 20% coinsurance). Job 2: role is okay but higher level and great benefits (16 weeks paternity, 0% coinsurance, 5 more days of vacation). Total comp is the same though. I wonder if I should just focus on role but Job 2 is a large company, so I can move around after 2-3 years I’d expect. Thoughts?
