From reading a number of books and listening to a number of podcasts about starting a business, one underlying factor they all share is to have deep passion for what you do. How do you know what your passion is? I mean I think a lot about golf but i don’t think that’s a passion. It’s my hobby. I think most people just know.

Unpopular opinion but I disagree with this. So many successful serial entrepreneurs launched many different ventures in completely different spaces all the time. It’s a big myth that you HAVE to be passionate about the thing that you’re building. I see this as a cliche that many “experts” use as “fluff” content in their books. Maybe there is some element to entrepreneurship itself that you enjoy regardless of the type of space you’re in. (Winning sales pitches, marketing, designing things, connecting with people etc. focus on that if you can’t find a problem to solve that you love). I believe it’s more about your attitude and mindset and your reasons for wanting to start a venture, which doesn’t always have to only come from passion.

That’s true. And sometime being “passionate” about something simply means you’re happy doing it. So a happy person might find passion in balancing quickbooks or flipping burgers, while a depressed person might hate their job working as a celebrity party host. Passions can also change over time. I loved starting new businesses, for a while now I’m looking forward to selling the biz and being a sole prop again.

Don’t overthink it. Your passion is something you just do because you enjoy it. One way to discover a passion is to try many things and see what sticks. So keep trying new things-

Wife has a services startup and in addition, has a great idea for a product / app that has the potential to be a B2B hit and B2C as well. Large market, creative idea and not too much competition. Will need sophisticated tech development. Given we are not dev / engg, what advice can you share with regards to getting someone tech hands-on with expertise on board? What are the different ways non tech founders approach this? Any ideas will be very helpful. Looking for a starting point. Thank you.

I just left my pre-seed startup that was running out of cash (we made $100,000 in revenue this year, and sunk $1m in costs). I was making $40,000 as a developer (plus 20k stock options at $1/share per year) and they refused to pay me any more money. I have 17,000 vested stock options, total number of shares at the time of my contract was 4million. I’m a bit confused about share dilution and if it’s worth it for me to buy some of my stock options… thanks in adv!

Any craft beer brewers here?

In the last two year I’ve gotten more and more into alcohol free beer. The selection in my country (Europe) is still small and mainly driven by the big brands (e.g. Heineken). My idea is to start my own small brewery which only produces alcohol free beer as a bit of a pendant to the booming local craft beer industry. Any thoughts on that idea or someone who has experience in the market?

Friends, need some feedback on an idea:

I’m thinking of starting a podcast interviewing leaders at startups about their experience with specific challenges - I know, cliche, get a more original hobby, etc.

Not looking for the narrative arc of How I Built This or Masters of Scale. Instead, looking to uncover specific problems faced by companies that tried something new for the first time. What did they not see coming, how did they adapt and measure, etc.

What are your thoughts on this format?
