Could the billable hour system ever be replaced? Or is it truly that much better than the alternatives?

Not better, just more profitable for firms.

Yes. Whether by AI or some technology not yet discovered, we will be able to solve problems in less time than it currently takes. The focus will gradually shift from Value of work to Volume of work (while increasing Value). That is when the billable hour will die. In that case, everything will eventually become project-based or carry a contingency fee.

Love the optimism but this assumes a logical system, which isn’t the case with the big law market. People thought the same thing when we shifted from legal research in books to Lexis/Westlaw and from manual doc review to technology assisted doc review. The billable hour has survived them all.

That said, you are absolutely correct with respect to mid and small law markets that are run more logically and are well on their way to killing the billable hour.

I need some record of my misery.

I’m a first year associate (almost second year). I work at a national firm and I’m not a litigator. When I started with the firm, I was told I could work out of any office. Long story short, I regret choosing the office that I chose. I’d like to transfer to another office - is that a difficult ask? I’m licensed in the state I’d like to transfer to. I don’t know how to make this request.

Foreign LLM student here. I plan to take the NY bar exam in February. I’m thinking of taking a bar prep course (most likely Barbri). They offer two options: the “traditional” course (which lasts around 2.5 months) and an extended 6-month course. The difference in price is substantial – 2.5k for the traditional course vs 6k for the extended one. Any thoughts/recommendations on which one I should take? In case it is helpful, I come from a civil law country. Thanks!

Does anyone know if this is normal? I joined a vault 100 firm in September last year. The firm put me on tier 7. In January I had the associate review and everything was normal. After a couple of weeks, I got the call from the hiring partner telling my bonus and new salary (because of the firm-wide salary increase). I realized I still get paid as a 7 year associate. The partner said because I joined the firm later in the year, it’s normal not to advance in the next year. Is it? Thanks!

Partners - Do you ever take vacations?

I have been at my current firm for about 1.5 years, and in that entire time the partner in my group hasn't been out of the office a single time. Is that normal? I can't tell if it's standard for big law partners to not take time off, if the dynamics for my group may be different (only 1 partner in the entire group), or it the partner I work with is just a masochist.
