Currently 4th year at below-market firm. Has anyone in similar situation found success with using offer from market paying firm to negotiate either (a) higher base comp, or (b) retention bonus? Worried about pissing off current firm and/or them calling my bluff if I don’t actually decide to leave and it leaves a bad taste in their mouth.

Just go to the market paying firm. I've been at both and market paying is so much better in every way. Especially as a midlvl +

You could try to negotiate but wouldn’t you still face the same issue next year even if you successfully negotiate now (ie, you would still make below market next year). I was in your shoes a few years ago. They said they would match market for my then current class year, but they didn’t entertain my original proposal of having them commit to always paying me a cravath scale salary for my class year. As others have pointed out, you will face salary compression in the following years and you’ll cumulatively make a lot more money by lateraling.

Is your current firm blackbox or just below market at every level? You can only really use another offer as leverage once so even if you get a bump/bonus, it’s unlikely it’ll make you on par with a market paying firm for long.

I’d probably just jump unless partnership is extremely likely (and it never is). The fact that you interviewed elsewhere alone is probably a sign you want to leave your current firm regardless.

Looking for some advice as I am considering relocating to US. How difficult is for HR professionals to get a work visa? I think from what I read I qualify under eb3 (no master yet) or h1b. How do for do about looking for positions that sponsor your visa? I'm in the defense sector and have previously healthcare and financial services experience. Also worked in global matrix organisations with US teams so know the culture quite well. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey Bowl,
I work for a late stage(ipo) start up, earlier this year we were acquired & since then they got rid of our yearly bonuses and gave us an ESOP grant.
2 RIFs later we are almost bare bones. Since we are coming up on our usual yearly evaluations many of us assumed (with multiple conversation from our managers) that pay raises and promotions were due.
In a recent All hands we found out that this year there will be no pay raises nor promotions based off merit. Is it time to jump ship?

I am a new joinee to CTS . It's going to be a month now and I haven't received my laptop.

I gave one interview for a project and was selected. They assigned me allocation but haven't reached out to me after that.

I am not sure whom to reach out to for any query and to some people whom reached they don't respond with any answer .

What can I do to get a working project as i don't want to sit idle?

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. 1st yr at a nyc v50 firm doing general transactional work. I know the lateral market for transactional lawyers is hot but not as hot for juniors. I just want a change of scenery because my current firm is bleeding good associates / not giving great training imo / and just seems small. Would lateralling this early feasible? Would it look bad on my resume?

When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.
