I think it depends on how specialized you are and how technically competent you are in your field. If you are looking to get that role in mid size or bigger you need to have an industry specialty, be technically competent and be semi-good at selling work. If you are looking for something at a smaller firm, I would say it’s probably more realistic. But nothing is guaranteed in this market.
Yes, absolutely. Your value has increased a lot as a manager in industry. That experience understanding how the sausage is made if you will is invaluable because you can offer clients empathy and practical solutions. Keep that in focus and go for it. There are firms out there that will surely give you that opportunity. I had no public accounting experience and came in as a senior manager for what it’s worth. I’ve been successful in this role.
I wish you luck! My personal experience within my team in public accounting is that they don’t look too favorably on industry experience unfortunately (I.e. we had an industry manager with several years at level interview and they were only willing to bring them in as a senior)
If you were in non b4 going to b4, chances are slim, otherwise it depends.
Circling back… I got an offer for senior manager in public accounting and also associate director in an industry role. Title doesn’t seem like it means very much outside of public accounting and it’s more about the responsibilities and roles.
For clarification, I was a manager in public accounting before I left for industry, now considering going back to public accounting at a senior manager level. I don’t doubt that I’m at least a manager level in public accounting.
Will that industry job get you to where you want to go in your career? If you want to be head of tax, is that a role that positions you skill and opportunity wise to one day get to that? If both fit with your lifestyle then that’s the man question in my mind.
