The grass isn’t always greener. There are other intangibles outside of comp, such as culture, work life balance, etc…. Make sure you’re looking at it completely. The grass is greener where you water it.
Given how hot the market is right now, not sure I would consider a role that is a step back in comp unless you were editing to a gig specifically for WLB, like an industry role.
Isn’t the expert track looked down upon within McK compared to generalist? I thought they have lower comp as well?
lower bonus i think
Sounds like you're planning to stay in consulting for the long haul. How easy or hard will it be to get back to your current employer (and your current positioning as a future leader) if the role at McK doesn't work out?
Pro
No way I’d make that move, run.
Expert path is firstly where they place outsiders to the firm. Second class citizens is very much the treatment.
You will likely be working 40% harder, and competing in a relationship based business with those who have established partner networks.
Second class citizen, not treated as “real” Mckinsey… and a pay/title cut on top? Not much to think about.
Left McK for a pretty reasonable bump
Are you on track to make Partner-equiv at Hackett? If so, I’d stay and consider moving over later. If not, I’d consider it. You can move to AP quickly (1-2 years) if you deliver + ppl like you (e.g., you are friendly / aren’t an asshole). At Expert AP, success tends to be a function of how good you are at selling/confirming new studies while you ED+CD. If you think you can consistently bring in incremental engagements or if there are plenty of consistent paid days lined up for you because of a talent / expert gap, I would strongly consider. If not, avoid.
I would do it for the exit ops.
