Berlin is surprisingly affordable stay in and to fly there from Baltimore International. Berlin is one of the few cities in the world that still has housing costs under control, especially in the former East Berlin, and Play Air offers $270 roundtrip flights from BWI to Berlin.
5 years ago, I spent a week in Cuba, ate and drank like a king, got gifts for my whole family, and spent a lil less than $1000 for everything (visa, lodging, flight, ETC.) I mostly stayed in hostels (about $10) and then had about $40 a day to spend on whatever.
A couple of years ago, I got a great Cyber Monday deal on an 11 day Caribbean cruise for $400 including fees and taxes. Airfare was about $400 because it was in and out of different cities. Totally amazing! Every year I look for another great deal.
The least I ever spent on an international trip was the Dominican Republic. Booked the flights and the all-inclusive hotel with points. Had a rental car and booked one excursion outside the resort. All-in for two people and 5 nights was about $250 (total, not per person).
Getting time off is easy but going on a vacation is not inexpensive anymore. Did a cruise for 5 nights with my girlfriends and we only spent about $750 for everything including souvenirs and all.
I adore Vietnam, and $1000 a month would be enough for me to live happily in Hanoi. There is a lot to do, nice people, and a dynamic city.
Madagascar! Beautiful country with delicious food with French, African, and Asian influences that is dirt cheap! Traveling takes a lot of time, but it is all part of the journey.
South East Asia is my preferred travel destination over Latin America; although rates are comparable, the locale feels safer and more advanced. It would be my personal preference even though I adore Vietnam and believe it to be on the rise. People are friendly, the food is fantastic, and there are many options for dining out that have something to offer everyone.
Cambodia. Extremely cheap food and rent, and fast internet, very inexpensive albeit quite unsafe, you'll need a vpn at all times, and excellent weather along the shore.
Bali and Japan! Oh well, I couldn't say my Japan trip was really cost-effective. But it was fun!
Malaysia. I only spent $600 for a week. The place and food are great.
I applied for a vacation leave a month before. It was approved after 2 weeks. So I'd say it is really important to plan your vacation ahead of time.
When are you planning to go on vacation? And where? How about any SEA countries?
$500-$600 is more than enough. I think it also depends if you're traveling alone or not. The process may vary as well depending on the season.
