Dallas v. Austin, can anyone breakdown what the main differences between these two cities are?

Born and raised in Dallas. Live in Austin.

Dallas: huge suburb. Even ‘downtown’ is a suburb basically. More affordable, lots of shops and restaurants but little to no culture. Ok food scene, not special or unique.

Austin: much, much smaller, not as focused on shopping/‘luxury’, many outdoor activities, great food, beautiful landscapes just outside the city, more diverse in thought, much less diverse in skin tones (lotta white people out here)

So currently live in Austin but have lived in Dallas for 8+ years. I always find that those who were raised in Dallas have more of a disdain for it. Probably people who lived in the suburbs - but everyone I know who lived closer to the heart of the city loves Dallas. Dallas still has an awesome food scene. Many days I find myself wanting to go back to Dallas.

DFW: Oil, church, black full-sized SUVs. Feels like it is doing an impression of itself and takes that job seriously.

Austin: Bean bag chairs, $8 lattes, can’t decide if it wants to be SF or Portland. You can electric scooter from one end to the other if a pothole doesn’t wipe you out.

Im a native Texan but spent 15 years in NYC before moving back to Austin five years ago. Generally agree with G1 but would add:

Culture is so so different. As a coast person, I don’t feel like I have to code switch in Austin like I do in Dallas. Austin’s vibe is more liberal, less religious. Not saying everyone in Dallas is a church-going conservative but my Dallas colleagues curse way less and are prone to asking me if I’ve found a church family…

Dallas is also much more insular. Lots of money and I’m always surprised about how grown ass adults will talk about what private k-12 school they went to. Harder to break into that culture as an outsider.

Dallas is a proper city (as judged by an ex NYer). Austin is tiny.

Yeah I’m a NYer and Austin is just waaay too small for me unfortunately

If you're weighing out moving to one city or the other, don't overlook the airport situation either. Dallas has two, and DFW in particular can get you damn near anywhere in the US or overseas pretty easily. Austin-Bergstrom is small and much more limited on direct flights, particularly if you want to leave the continental US.

like

If you travel a lot Dallas is a way better city. Your options with DFW & DAL domestic or internationally are amazing.

I' lived in Austin in the 90s until the early 2000s, then moved to Dallas for a number of years and then back to Austin. I agree that Dallas is way more affordable housing wise. It is true that the wealth is huge and the number of majore coporate headquarters doesn't hurt that. Austin is on its way with growth. They are the largest amount of under construction $1M+ homes in Austin out of anywhere in TX. The influx of people and the amount of construction is something that seems to be putting strains on the infrastructure. Austin leaders used to have the mindset that if you don't build it people won't come here but they did anyway.

As in lifestyle ,culture , or work ? There are so many . The complete set of big cities in tx that make the tx triangle vary with many drawbacks and benefits

Aren't you supposed to state the difference across those aspects you mentioned? Why asking OP again?

I lived in Dallas for 6 years and just moved to Austin for work, so I can give you a fresh perspective. It took me almost 3 years in Dallas to find a solid friend group. People are way more closed off and less accepting to welcome people into their group. They tend to stick with the same people they went to college with. I’d say they are more religious and traditional. Dallas itself is slightly more affordable than Austin, but it’s a huge sprawl. You’ll spend so much time in the car. I will say there is more diversity in Dallas and there’s more of an arts, food, sports and entertainment scene. I also miss having two big airports that are easily accessible. There are very little outdoor activities though.

Everyone in Austin has been so welcoming and I’ve met lots of people in my 10 months here. There is always sooooo much going on. I felt like I always had to seek activities out in Dallas.
You can drive 15 min outside of the city and feel like you’re in a different world. AUS airport could be better but I also feel less inclined to leave the city now that I live here.

My partner and I bought our home back in 2020. We got a good deal, low rate. But we want to move into a more spacious SFH. However, as we all know this market is crazy. Everything we want costs $620k+ and bc of rates it makes our mortgage estimates $3500+. We are currently paying $2k. And it looks we need to sell the house simultaneously as look for a new one or our contingency isn’t as attractive. I know it’s based on personal circumstances. But what would you do? - not move, sell and buy?

Need some advice on renting here in ATX.

Back in May 2021, I rented a property that had sustained damage during the big snow storm. This wasn't disclosed at lease signing. The home leaked every time it rained, mold was found in the home & the LL failed to make repairs that resulted in me falling down a flight of stairs. I moved out& rented an apt for 2 mos before signing a lease on the house I live in now. This house has a serious big problem& I've found mold here too. Continued below
