I’m just confused how it could be “Delta/Lufthansa.” They aren’t partners, and you can’t purchase a single ticket across both airlines. Did you purchase separate tickets and leave your bag at baggage claim during a connection?
I booked through AMEX travel where they purchased all the tickets together under the same itinerary. When I asked delta if I needed to recheck they said no, they said because of that they acknowledge the final destination and that they would hand off the luggage to Lufthansa prior to that flight. The delta tags printed showed the final airport as well.

They’ll give you a certain amount for the lost bags but you should check the specific airline policy.

Also, check your coverage with the credit card you bought the tickets with as many have lost luggage coverage.
