I’ve done both. I’m currently in a Sr Manager role and have turned down a handful of promotions along the way. I get that I’d probably be further along in my career if I hadn’t, but I have more than what I need and I also have the balance to be able to enjoy it.
You get to decide what’s important to you. If that’s the almighty dollar, chase it. If it’s a trade off between balancing income and quality of life, chase that.
Not really what you’re asking, but in my experience work - life balance increased the more senior I got. Once I hit a certain level I have had a ton of control over my schedule that I never came close to having at more junior levels
I experienced the same!
My career thus far is nothing but struggling and failing to climb the ladder. Partly why I went into consulting in hopes I could jump back in a few years to higher positions.
