Do I need a car in LA? I really want to go client side there and want new experiences but coming from a city where a car is not a necessity. Would hope to live close to work for an Uber or close walk?

I lived my first year and a half in Los Angeles with only a bicycle, and the occasional public transit or Uber ride. It is completely doable, you just have to be prepared for the fact that everything will take significantly longer than just driving around in your car. Which is saying something considering Los Angeles traffic.

That said, if you go with the bicycle route, you will end up with the tightest ass of your life. 🍑

like

It’s also one of the leading cities in bicycle deaths but like public transit, depends on the route

It’s cheaper to have a car in LA in my opinion. Uber rides can add up quite significantly. I’d recommend leasing one if you don’t feel like buying. That way you can get the latest models. But the most important advantage of a car is that you get to explore the city and everything around it. That’s the best part about living in LA.

like

Have a few friends out there too w cars. Might help lol.

You don't have to have one depending on where you live and work, but it makes being here a hell of a lot easier.

like

You need a car... you’ll be really stuck without one. It’s one of the reasons I left LA for a happier car-free life in London.

You need a car in LA. Nothing is close. Public transportation is a joke and Ubers will get expensive. Hopefully all those rental scooters laying about here will be decimated by the pandemic.

I moved to LA last year (previously lived in NYC and London) and hadn’t owned a car in almost 20 years. Just buy the car, it’s worth it. Transit is ok, ubers add up, but it’s mostly worth it for the quick trips out of the city to the beach/mountains that you can’t get to without a car.

like

LA is big and spread out so it really depends on where you’re looking. Ubering might be feasible now because traffic is lower but it’s coming back and when the city is humming along it’s cost prohibitive. I think the breakeven point between owning a car and strictly rideshare is $10k so you’d have to do some math.
Our rail is hub and spoke, meaning you have to go to downtown to switch lines and unless you live close to a one, it might not be an option.
Honestly, I can’t imagine life in LA without a car. There’s so much to see and do (when we’re open).

Sort of.. I went a year without one, its better with a car.

I live in LA and know only three people who don't have cars. One makes a ton of $$ and just takes Ubers everywhere. One has a more modest income and takes the bus and gets rides from people. And the third is married and his wife drives him around if needed. They are all making it work. Things to consider: LA is very spread out in general and the housing prices near your job might be prohibitive. Public transit isn't great and doesn't always feel safe and it takes a long time to get from one place to another.

Carmax is generally a good bet for a less painful used car shopping experience.

Yes but there even apps now that let you rent someone’s car for hours or days and are cheaper than normal car rentals.

Yes. You absolutely need a car!

Ex New Yorker here. Went the first year without a car. You can survive but it really limits your experience of LA as well as the greater region. I’d recommend getting one unless you’re only here temporarily.

LA is big as many are saying. You'll have to drill down where your job is located and decide if you're willing to live in the cities around it. It's possible to live without a car in LA but it is more restricting when you don't.

I get around on a combo of bike, public transit, and uber, but yeah I do need a car at some point to enjoy what LA and CA offers in terms of nature and roadtrips etc.

My client’s video was aired on television without a license. The video’s use does not fall within fair use. The production company removed the video from its website once they were informed in order to mitigate economic harm. Can my client bring an action? If so, what can he seek in monetary damages? Any insight would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Have any of you taken "low bono" clients while working at a firm? I want to take on a low bono client or two but not sure who would get the money. This is a contract opportunity through a non profit so I'm assuming a 1099 will be issued. The per hour rate is significantly less than my billable rate. I would (obviously) like the money but my real objective is just getting experience/networking since I recently moved to a new state and don't have clients of my own.

I have been approached with an opportunity at JP Morgan Chase for their private client advisor role. The book is about 30M all in. I am currently an experienced hybrid asset manager wholesaler and have experience in advising as well. Curious about the opportunity with JPM and if it’s worth it. I currently make about 160k and if JPM would give me a high draw for the first 3 years to build, and if it’s feasible to sustain that 160+ there.
